Day 1: Acquisition July 22, 2008

These are the first words typed on my iPhone. So far they are like slow torture for somebody used to about 30 wpm on the BB keyboard.

If you want an iPhone in NYC by the way, go to the 5th avenue location around 3:30 am. I only waited about 2 1/2 hours, as opposed to the folks who came around 7 and waited for five hours.

I’m going to be typing this blog entirely on my iPhone to get accustomed to the keyboard.  As a Blackberry user who is skeptical about (but forced to) purchase an iPhone, I’ll sort of document my experiences switching over for current BlackBerry users considering taking the plunge.

Just curious. Why are you being “forced to purchase” an iphone?

Work. Project involving iPhone app development.

Typing on the iPhone is not easy. Note that on websites, if your phone is turned to the landscape mode, the keyboard becomes much larger – and is therefore easier to type. If you are developing an app that involves typing, consider doing that. I have no idea why you can’t do it in Mail or SMS. Those are two places where the larger keyboard would be really handy.

Unfortunately, the iPhone doesn’t support landscape keyboard orientation in any application except for Safari.

Here’s to hoping that (and the lack of copy/paste, MMS, and turn-by-turn navigation) will be fixed shortly.

Oh, and allowing programs to run in the background, though that’s technically a terms of service issue. There have been a few unauthorized apps that have been able to do so.

Wow, this is a popular blog.
